Ever since Telltale Games announced it would be closing late in 2018, many have been left wondering about who will try to fill the noticeable void in adventure games now left in the company's wake. Now, it seems like a new developer could be rising to the task to carry that torch and it features some previous Telltale devs themselves.

As reported today by Variety, AdHoc Studio is a new company founded by previous employees of Telltale Games. AdHoc is currently comprised of CEO Michael Choung, Nick Herman, Dennis Lenart, and Pierre Shorette. All four members of AdHoc have previously worked at Telltale with Choung leaving the company in 2016 to go to Night School Studio. Herman, Lenart, and Shorette left in 2017 to work for Ubisoft on a project that was not announced. The group was said to have hopes of wanting to found a new studio at Ubisoft, but never were afforded that opportunity which is how they have now come back to join with Choung under AdHoc.

With AdHoc, this group is looking to take narrative-driven games in directions that they previously weren't able to at prior companies. "Having to pitch something that ultimately fifty people need to understand and approve means a lot of the more adventurous or risky ideas often die early on for a bunch of different reasons,” Dennis Lenart told Variety. “We liked the idea that if it was just the four of us, we’d be able to more confidently wade into unfamiliar water.”

As for what those at AdHoc want to create right now, it still seems undecided, although they have taken inspiration from Netflix's recent Black Mirror special Bandersnatch, which was a choose your own adventure style of interactive story. “With streaming platforms in our homes and cell phones in our pockets we’re in this unique time where the barrier to entry to interaction is gone," Shorette said. "So as a group of people whose expertise and experience has come from making Interactive Narrative that sits in that space between, we feel now is the perfect time to form a studio that focuses on creating content for a new space.”

Even though AdHoc hasn't announced officially what its first project will be or who it will potentially be partnering with, the studio seems to be teasing a Bandersnatch-like project with a focus on live-action taking center stage rather than animation. Live-action games have been less common in recent years when compared to their prevalence a few decades back, but this advent isn't a new one.

We'll have to wait and see to learn more about what AdHoc will do in the future, but I'm personally always down for more interactive narrative projects in gaming.
