On May 9, the official Japanese Twitter of the Dragon Ball series announced a new movie is in production, and is scheduled to release in 2022 in Japan. The tweets also mentions brand new comments from Akira Toriyama were shared.

The official Dragon Ball Japanese site was also updated with a new message from Akira Toriyama, who most notably confirmed the new movie is a direct sequel to Dragon Ball Super Broly. Furthermore, Toriyama teased that an unexpected character might be heavily featured. Lastly, the mangaka confirmed to be writing some of the dialogues and being involved in the script writing. The press release also confirmed he's the character designer of the movie.

Akira Toriyama: "A new Dragon Ball Super movie was green-lit and is in production! It's a sequel to Dragon Ball Super Broly! This time as well, I am involved in the movie's scriptwriting and story.
