The official Dragon Ball Japanese site was also updated with a new message from Akira Toriyama, who most notably confirmed the new movie is a direct sequel to Dragon Ball Super Broly. Furthermore, Toriyama teased that an unexpected character might be heavily featured. Lastly, the mangaka confirmed to be writing some of the dialogues and being involved in the script writing. The press release also confirmed he’s the character designer of the movie.

I translated Akira Toriyama’s comments below.

Akira Toriyama: “A new Dragon Ball Super movie was green-lit and is in production! It’s a sequel to Dragon Ball Super Broly! This time as well, I am involved in the movie’s scriptwriting and story. The movie’s plot is still a secret, so I can’t tell you anything yet, but one thing I can say is that an unexpected character might be in the spotlight. The movie will also have a new feel to it visuals wise, and it’s shaping up to be really good looking. I hope you’re looking forward to it!”

May 9 is celebrated as Goku Day, as how in Japanese, 5 can be pronounced go and 9 can be pronounced ku. Many fans around the world were expecting a huge Dragon Ball announcement for the occasion, and Toei did not disappoint. Personally speaking, let’s say I have mixed feelings about DB Super, so maybe the new 2022 movie will make me change my mind about the series.
