Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gets a In-Depth Gameplay Preview on Nintendo Treehouse: Live
The Animal Crossing: New Horizons team took the Nintendo Treehouse stage to show off over 25 minutes of gameplay.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons was given a new trailer and a March 20, 2020 release date at today’s Nintendo Direct. As seen in the trailer, Tom Nook and his sons have opened up their own airline service and have given your character a trip to an island. Once you arrive, you’ll be set up with a brand new tent. Unfortunately, those Nook Boys aren’t giving out everything for cheap, so you’ll need to get to work and earn enough bells to pay them back.
Animal Crossing fans should feel right at home here. The game is taking things from all the past entries into the franchise. Early in the demo, we see that you can move furniture in your tent by half units, which is something that’s coming from Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. You can also now place furniture outside, letting you rest in your favorite chair by the beach.
Tom Nook provides with your very own NookPhone. This handy device lets you do a variety of things. The demo showed off the ability to use DIY recipes to build new items. For instance, if you want an ax, you’ll need to gather wood and some stone. This crafting system lets you use the materials you gather in the world to build new tools and furniture.
Of course, if you’d like you can purchase the tools from Timmy Nook. Speaking of Timmy and Tommy, they use a system called Nook Miles. This is a series of challenges that you can complete to earn miles that you can use to buy new items and activities.
They also showed off a bit of multiplayer on the stream. Each player used one Joycon to play together, which should make it easy for families to play together. You can have up to eight players living on the same island. And, up to four of them can play together using four Joycons. The team didn’t show it off, but they did mention that, with online play, up to eight players can play on the same island for tons of multiplayer fun.
Obviously, there is a lot to dive into here. The 27-minute gameplay demo is chock full of new info. If you’d like, you can watch the full thing at the bottom of this post. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is coming to Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020.
