Every quarter Nintendo releases its financial data. These reports are packed with the latest sales figures on the Nintendo Switch's hardware and software as well as Nintendo's other ventures, such as their mobile titles. Today is the day in which they released their report for Quarter 2, which ran from July 1 to September 31 this year.
Alongside the news that in its first couple of weeks Super Mario 3D All-Stars sold like hotcakes, Nintendo has revealed that the rest of their titles aren't doing too badly either. Aside from 3D All-Stars, Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to be the title that impresses most.
Since the last financial update, the island living simulator has sold 3.64 million units, cementing itself as second place in the top 10 best selling Switch games. It's now closed the gap on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to under three million units with New Horizons now heading into its first holiday season. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate became the third title to break the 20 million unit mark, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild just over 250k units away from the milestone.
Alongside Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Paper Mario: The Origami King launched in this quarter. While it had a little longer on the market than All-Stars, the title still managed to sell an impressive 2.82 million units.
The latest report details the full top 10 selling Switch titles, which look like this:
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 28.99 million units
Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 26.04 million units
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 21.10 million units
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 19.74 million units
Pokemon Sword/Shield – 19.02 million units
Super Mario Odyssey – 18.99 million units
Pokemon Let’s Go, Pikachu/Eevee – 12.49 million units
Super Mario Party – 12.10 million units
Splatoon 2 – 11.27 million units
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 8.32 million units
Nintendo's sales continue to shine across the board. Software sales are now up 71.4% year-over-year and digital revenue up 139.4% YOY.
In terms of Nintendo's hardware sales, they rose 80.9% YOY. This is especially impressive as both the Switch Lite and the better battery life model of the Nintendo Switch were released during this period in 2019. The Nintendo Switch family of systems has now sold over 63 million units since it launched.
The report also details good news for those looking to get their heads on a Nintendo Switch in time for Christmas. Nintendo said:
"Hardware production is proceeding normally, and we are increasing shipments in preparation for the holiday season. However, demand remains high and there continue to be shortages in some regions, so we are working to deliver products to
consumers as soon as possible."
2020 continues to be a fantastic year for Nintendo and with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity still to come, it's only going to get better.
