As last week's only major release, it should come as no surprise that EA and BioWare's Anthem debuted at the top of the sales chart in the UK last week taking down the previous week's winner Far Cry New Dawn in the process. Despite the victory, the first reported physical sales for Anthem may be raising some red flags.
As reported by Eurogamer, Anthem's first-week physical sales were only half that of Mass Effect Andromeda, BioWare's 2017 release. While digital sales have increased quite a bit over the past few years and surely helped make up this gap a bit more, it's doubtful that Anthem sold enough in the digital space to equal the release of Andromeda. Comparing Anthem, a new IP, to that of Mass Effect Andromeda is perhaps a bit unfair considering the latter is a mega-popular franchise with millions of fans.
Still, it's still a bit concerning start for Anthem. Resident Evil 2 still remains the year's fastest-selling game in the UK, as well, ahead of Anthem. We'll have to wait and see if Anthem can hit EA's projections of between 5 and 6 million copies before the end of March.
As for other notable entries on the sales chart this week, there's not much to write home about. Far Cry New Dawn, FIFA 19, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Metro Exodus rounded out the top five for the week in that respective order.
