The death of Carla Yeager has always been a crucial part of the story, as it is the catalyst for Eren's hatred of the Titans and subsequently the nation of Marley. However, though the Smiling Titan was responsible for her demise, many fans have speculated that Eren had something to do with the events that transpired at the beginning of the manga. After all, Eren is capable of manipulating the events of the past through the power of the Founding Titan.

Did Eren Kill His Mother?
Before Chapter 139 came out, Eren influencing the past and killing his mother was only a theory. However, now that the series is over, we have official word on exactly how Eren was involved at that point in the story.
Eren sacrificed his mother for a better future for the world.
Eren reveals to Armin that he had a crucial role to play in his mother's death during their final conversation in Chapter 139. Eren explains that Bertholt was in danger of being eaten by the Smiling Titan, as he had crossed paths with it during the fall of Shiganshina. In the eyes of Eren Yeager, he had to ensure Bertholt survived to later pass on the Colossal Titan to Armin, and thus manipulated the movements of the Smiling Titan towards his home -- which subsequently lead to his mother's death. In short, Eren influenced the actions of the Smiling Titan in order to save both Bertholt and Armin -- whilst also fueling his younger self's hatred towards the Titans. By doing so, Eren ensured that the events of the manga played out exactly as they should have.
What's Next for Attack on Titan?
It is clear that Chapter 139 of Attack on Titan will lead to the manga's conclusion. However, a statement released by the Bessatsu Shonen Magazine Editorial Department seems to indicate that this may not be the last we hear from the series.
