Are Albedo And Rhinedottir Evil in Genshin Impact & Lore Analysis
What will happen with Albedo in Genshin Impact Version 2.3 ?
Genshin Impact 2.3 had a surprising story part in its trailer, with Albedo fighting against other characters, did he become evil?
Genshin Impact 2.3 will add a new main Event, Shadows Amidst Snowstorms, continuing the Dragonspine Event from 1.2 focusing on Albedo. Moreover, the trailer has a scene where we can spot the Traveler, Bennet, Eula, and Amber fighting against Albedo.
Needless to say this contains spoilers for Genshin Impact.

Shadows Amidst Snowstorms event story spoilers, new lore (Update)
During the event, we learned that there is an impostor posing as Albedo, and who looks exactly like him. This impostor are definitely the one we’ve seen Amber, Eula, and Bennett fight against in the trailer.
Moreover, Albedo during the new Story Quest The Snowy Past directly confirmed Rhinedottir and Gold are the same people. So you might now be wondering if that makes Rhinedottir evil, seeing she’s the one who created Durin and tons of nasty monsters like the Rifthounds and the Golden Wolflord.
Well, you need to see Genshin Impact as an anime, a good anime. And it’s never that simple. Characters aren’t “good” or “evil”. It doesn’t seem like Rhine is a “villain”, more like she has twisted values as an alchemist. If you’re familiar with the Nasuverse, Rhine seems to be a typical magi (read our entry-level intro to the Nasuverse).
And all these monsters were byproducts of her experiments that she judged as inconsequential. That’s how I see it judging from the description of the Riftborn Regalia, the drop of the Golden Wolflord:
“Gold” mass-produced these malformed wolf packs almost as if by accident, like shrunken drawings on discarded sheets of paper, and the horns on this one represent its authority to command its dark brood to dissolve space itself.
You also often have cases where a villain was initially well-intentioned but took some wrong decisions. Showing how anyone could become a villain.
I expect miHoYo to do something like that with Rhine’s background. We’ll only know in a few months or years, assuming the Traveler ends up meeting her one day. It’ll probably be around when we will meet Alice as well. Assuming this happens within the Teyvat Story Chapter, it’ll be sometime between now and 2025. Assuming the third part of Albedo’s story is released a year from now on, we could see Rhine then too.
Our original story with our past theories is included below.
Is Albedo turning evil in Genshin Impact 2.3?
First, we need to take a look at Albedo’s story, as told in the Character Profiles you unlock after raising his friendship.
Long story short Albedo is an artificial human, who was created by Rhinedottir. She’s an alchemist from Khaenri’ah and is described as cold and strict, however, she is also friends with Alice, Klee’s mom.
Ever since he was born, Albedo was taught alchemy by Rhine, and they’d explore dungeons and Domains together. One day, after finding the “Heart of Naberius”, Rhine left Albedo, telling him to go to Mondstadt and “Find the truth of the world”. We don’t know what the “Heart of Naberius is” but we might learn more in this new Event.
Albedo then became the Chief Alchemist of the Knights of Favonius thanks to a recommendation letter of Alice that Rhine left to him.
Another thing we know is that Gold, another alchemist from Khaenri’ah, created Durin and other monsters including the newly introduced Rifthounds. It’s speculation and unclear, but it looks like Albedo believes Gold was Rhinedottir herself. and that it’s because of his master’s creations that Khaenri’ah was destroyed. As hinted at the end of the 1.2 Event, Albedo believes that he too could end up destroying a nation, Mondstadt, because he’s one of Rhine’s creations. This would be accidental, Albedo isn’t evil and wants the Traveler to stop him if this ever happens.
Predictions and theories
One of Albedo’s goals is trying to find his master, so it’s likely his actions in the trailer have something to do with that. Albedo is also the kind of person who doesn’t explain his actions and let people swim. Like how he figured right away during the 1.6 Event that everything was a set-up by Alice, but didn’t tell the others. So he’s definitely doing this for the greater good.
miHoYo are huge otaku and they regularly do developments you’ll find in classic anime and manga ever since the 80s. An arc like this where an ally character temporarily becomes an enemy for a certain reason is a typical thing, and doesn’t mean they’re actually evil.
Knowing miHoYo, they will twist things a bit to make this typical pattern more interesting, but you definitely shouldn’t expect Albedo to actually be “evil”.
