Eivor Will Have a “Coherent Personality” in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

You should feel as if Eivor is "complete".

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has been widely talked about over the past few weeks, and conversations have been focused on the world of the game. However, in a recent pandemic style video, Darby McDevitt speaks about how the team approached creating the protagonist, Eivor.

The question presented is from “Ghostship23” who asks “How has the writing team ensured a strong characterization for both versions of the character?”  Narrative director Darby McDevitt responds stating that the first thing the team did was decide that they were going to “write a coherent character with a coherent personality.”

He mentions how they looked into other RPGs to see how they approach the making of a coherent character. One option he describes as a “blank slate” meaning that every choice the player picks is how the character is created. He then details the second option he explains as creating a character with a coherent personality. Allowing the player to choose from dialogue options that all still fall within a spectrum.

An example he gives is that players can investigate or be blunt, choosing to either call a lie out straight away, or allowing the NPC to continue lying and see where it leads. This coherent personality is the option that Ubisoft has opted for, allowing Eivor to “exist in a coherent space and have a coherent personality.” McDevitt says that no matter what paths players may choose to take, by the end of the game, they should feel as if Eivor was always Eivor and is “complete”.

Players can expect to experience a lot of “mystery and intrigue” surrounding Eivor apparently. We’ve already learned that players can choose to play as a male or female and that the narrative structure of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is unique.

The upcoming Viking adventure from Ubisoft should be arriving sometime in Holiday 2020 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. If you’re interested in pre-ordering it, you can do so on Amazon.
