Assassin's Creed Valhalla players are in for an early treat today due to a glitch in the Animus, or at least that's what Ubisoft's social teams have said in an effort to lean into the publisher accidentally releasing The Last Chapter DLC a week earlier than intended.

If you boot up your copy of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, you'll be greeted with a hefty download for the free expansion that wraps up Eivor's story and marks the end of Ubisoft's post-launch content support for the game, some two years after its initial release.

However, players have found that the expansion is already available. The official Twitter account for Assassin's Creed has acknowledged the mishap with a bit of self-referential fun, stating that the early release was due to an "unforeseen glitch in the Animus."

The social team went a step further, perhaps in an effort to secure a Christmas bonus, by digging its own hidden blade a little deeper with a tongue-in-cheek follow-up tweet.

At least Ubisoft's social team is having some fun with the gaffe. It's not the end of the world, even if it is the end of the road for Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

The early release has also brought another surprise to players in the form of a new quest included in the update. The significance of this particular quest, titled 'Shared History' is that Roshan, a character from next year's Assassin's Creed Mirage, teams up with Eivor in a one-off mission.

The new update, which is numbered 1.6.2, brings more than The Last Chapter DLC. For one, there's the new option to keep Eivor's hood up at all times, in true assassin fashion. There's also the option to purchase (with in-game currency) the rewards from the previous Festival events, which is handy if you missed out on any of the Festivals. Players are also being gifted one random free premium item each week from the Animus store, with the freebies being doled out every Tuesday.

There's a lot more to the update and the patch notes are extensive and well worth a read. You can give them a look over on the official website.

Sadly, it doesn't look like the early release of the DLC means that the Steam version will also be released early. If you want to play Assassin's Creed Valhalla on PC via Steam, you're still going to have to wait until December 6.
