Atlas Fallen is a mixed bag of experiences built with obvious passion by Deck13 (creators of The Surge) and bearing the Focus Entertainment logo. It features simple-to-understand but difficult to master combat that focuses on precise timing to execute slick combos and topple massive foes.
The game presents players with numerous tutorials that are often a bit too brief or too vague, and this holds especially true when it comes to combat and the shatter mechanic.
How To Shatter Enemies In Atlas Fallen
While combat can evolve into seemingly infinite chains of attacks and combos, one thing is certain: Shattering enemies is key to efficiently dropping foes (especially the mammoth wraiths). The world of Atlas is littered with sand-strewn wraiths, creatures created by the not-so-benevolent god, Thelos. Pretty early into Atlas Fallen, players are introduced to the shattering system. The only way to dispatch giant wraiths is to shatter each piece of their armor-clad bodies.
Doing so can be as simple as pummeling each carapace until it breaks; however, this is easily the least effective method. While smacking wraiths is indeed helpful to filling the shatter gauge, the key to shattering enemies is to utilize the hero’s shatter attack. In fact, most larger wraiths will spawn add-on wraiths the hero should deal with before re-focusing on their target. Dispatching the smaller wraiths will also fill up the shatter gauge, which is a blue bar located in the lower left corner of the screen. Once a segment of the bar is filled, the hero can unleash their shatter attack and deal massive damage to whichever piece of the enemy they have targeted. Doing so will often completely destroy pieces of the wraiths dependent upon the hero’s gear level in comparison to the wraith’s level. As the creatures become more difficult, so to do their shatter bars take more damage to break.
In order to initiate the attack once the gauge is filled, the player will press L2 and R2. If a wraith is killable, or a section of armor is destroyable with the current gauge, the creature or armor health bar will be highlighted in blue. Various essence stones can be equipped to enhance shatter attacks or fill the gauge quicker, and it is recommended to mix and match the stones as deemed necessary.
Shatter Tips & Tricks
- All parts of a giant wraith need to be shattered before it dies. This means that it does not particularly matter which section is targeted first. There does not seem to be an obvious benefit to any given section being shattered first.
- The top left corner of the screen shows a diagram of whichever giant wraith the hero is battling. They will drain as damage is dealt until they are grayed out.
- If the hero consistently takes a lot of damage or often dies, consider equipping an Idol that heals a chunk of health at once or over time (there are pros and cons to each, but they can be lifesavers either way).
- Be careful utilizing the lock-on system. It is often extremely difficult to shuffle targets off a large wraith to an add-on, so it is suggested to remove the lock-on from the initial target to an add if needed.
The shatter system is pretty cool in concept, and tackling the giant wraiths, elite wraiths, and bosses will reward the hero with plenty of useful loot, including regular and corrupted essence stones and fusion materials or recipes. Finding a style that fits the player's play will make the remainder of Atlas Fallen a much more pleasant experience.
