Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access Saves Won’t Transfer to the Final Game, So Go Crazy
As a clear work in progress, it's unlikely that your progress in the Early Access build of Baldur's Gate 3 will transition to the full game.
With its release last week on PC and Mac, the Early Access build of Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally giving players a long-awaited preview of what to expect from the upcoming RPG by Divinity: Original Sin developer Larian Studios. Granted, the build of the game earns its “Early Access” moniker, as the release is only a fraction of what will be in the final game. Though the build is still a hefty experience in its own right, Larian has clarified that players of the Early Access build should expect that, eventually, they’ll have to go into the final build of the game with a clean slate.
As noted by an update on the game’s Steam Community page, Larian Studios has detailed that save files and progress from the Early Access build of Baldur’s Gate 3 will “eventually be wiped” and not be compatible with the final release of the game in the future. Given that the build will be undergoing frequent updates and changes leading up to its release, this isn’t exactly a huge surprise in the grand scheme of things for an Early Access game. However, for a massive RPG like Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s important for the developer to set the expectation that players will be starting fresh when the game finally launches and to not get too attached to your custom characters.

However, the upside of that is with the Early Access version of the game, you pretty much have free reign to go into the game without hesitation and to try out things you normally wouldn’t in a playthrough. As we noted in our review of the Early Access version last week, it’s better to go into this version of Baldur’s Gate 3 with the mindset of it being an extended demo of the game than a fully-polished experience. So if you ever wanted to make a wizard hellbent on destroying everything in their path or a sexy Tiefling with an eye for causing mayhem, consider this your best opportunity to do that.
