Batman: Arkham Asylum is stellar, Arkham Origins is criminally underrated, and Arkham Knight is pretty darn good in its own right. Of all of Batman's greatest games over the past decade though, none of them top Batman: Arkham City, which as of today turns 8 years old.

On this day in 2011, Batman: Arkham City launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 before later coming to PC. The sequel to Arkham Asylum was immediately well-received upon release and boasts a staggering 96/100 score on Metacritic. In the months after release, Arkham City won numerous Game of the Year awards and later came to PC and eventually the Wii U as Batman: Arkham City - Armored Edition. It also reappeared in a remastered form in 2016 on current-gen platforms alongside Arkham Asylum in the Return to Arkham package.

To celebrate the game's anniversary, developer Rocksteady Studios today tweeted out a message to commemorate the occasion. "A huge thanks to all of our fans for saving the city through the years," said the tweet in question. It was accompanied by an image of Batman and Catwoman as seen from Arkham City.

While I know that it's just my own personal opinion that Batman: Arkham City is the best Batman game of the bunch, I really do think it's unmatched compared to others. While Asylum might be a tighter experience overall, I think Arkham City tells a nuanced, brilliant story and also features the best side-content in the series. In fact, I've had a strong urge to revisit the game as of late. Maybe I'll finally do that soon in light of this anniversary.

As for what The Dark Knight is up to next, WB Games Montreal has been teasing that it has a new Batman title in the works. While we have yet to find out what that game is, hopefully, we'll learn more in the coming weeks and months.
