With amiibo, Skylanders, and Disney Infinity all setting the standard for bringing NFC figurines to life through games, the only logical next step would be LEGO figurines – luckily, Warner Bros. will be delivering with a brand new LEGO title with a whole new set of tricks.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today that this fall will be bringing LEGO Dimensions, a new title in the popular LEGO series bringing together several franchises from previous games while also introducing a host of new ones.
Following a reveal trailer released this morning, franchises confirmed to make a return in LEGO Dimensions includes The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie, and Batman/DC Comics, while several of the notable new franchises entering the LEGO-verse includes The Wizard of Oz and Back to the Future.
LEGO Dimensions has been confirmed for release on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U on September 27th, 2015, with the Starter Bundle of the game retailing at $99.99 and including the LEGO Toy Pad and several LEGO Minifigurines that will be NFC compatible with the game: Batman from LEGO Batman, Gandalf from LEGO Lord of the Rings, Wyldstyle from The LEGO Movie, and a miniaturized LEGO Batmobile vehicle.
In a press release, Traveler’s Tales Games founder and Creative Director Jon Burton gave more details on what to expect from LEGO Dimensions:
“When kids play with Lego bricks, they build beyond the singular brands, intermixing all of their favorite characters and universes, and we have come up with a way for players to experience that in games. Now for the first time in a videogame, Lego fans can play in the virtual world and in the real world — combining everything without restrictions. Imagine putting LEGO Gollum from The Lord of the Rings behind the wheel of the Lego DeLorean Time Machine in New Ninjago City — the creative play is endless.”
Alongside the Starter Pack, several expansion sets, level packs, team packs, and fun packs will also be made available during the game’s release this year and afterward, with Warner Bros. detailing several of the new content packs expected to arrive this year. Additional content packs will also be announced in the coming months before release:
- A Back to the Future Level Pack with a Lego Marty McFly minifigure
- A Lego Ninjago Team Pack with Kai and Cole minifigures
- Three Ninjago Fun Packs with Jay, Nya and Zane minifigures
- Two DC Comics Fun Packs with Wonder Woman and Cyborg minifigures
- Three The Lord of the Rings Fun Packs with Lego Gollum, Lego Gimli and Lego Legolas minifigures
