The Nintendo Switch is now in its fifth year since release and it's shaping up to be one of the greatest consoles of all time.

The hybrid hardware has carved itself many different niches and is known for having some of the greatest games of all time, the perfect indie machine and a multiplayer sensation.

With that in mind, here are the ten best co-op games and the ten best multiplayer games on the Nintendo Switch.

10 Best Multiplayer Games on Nintendo Switch

Tetris 99

Tetris 99 is one of the most surprising games on the Nintendo Switch. It takes the classic Tetris formula and pits 99 players against each other in one of the most unique battle royale games on the market.

What makes the game even better is that it's free-to-play for anybody who subscribes to Nintendo's online service.

Super Mario Party

Nothing screams multiplayer carnage like Mario Party.

While Super Mario Party isn't the best the series has seen, it presents a great return to form for the board game/minigame title and is bound to cause countless arguments between players.

Fortnite

Not only is Fortnite one of the best multiplayer games on the Nintendo Switch, but it's one of the most popular games of all time.

Taking the battle royale genre into the mainstream, Epic Games struck gold with their free-to-play shooter.

Apex Legends

Like Fortnite, Apex Legends is one of the most popular titles on the planet.

Taking a slightly more serious approach to the battle royale genre, Apex is certainly one of the most beloved titles on the Switch.

Rocket League

Rocket League is the perfect mixture of high octane, fast-paced gameplay and silly chaotic fun.

The car football title already had a massive audience, however, when it went free-to-play over the last few months, it reached even greater heights. It's absolutely a must-play for Nintendo Switch owners.

Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight is a perfect example of what happens when you nurture a multiplayer game.

The horror title has had tons of fantastic crossovers and has built up one of the biggest, most rabid multiplayer fanbases in the whole of gaming.

Super Mario Maker 2

Super Mario Maker 2 is definitely one of the more unique titles on the list. The crux of the multiplayer works slightly different in this game than others, however, it offers multiple layers.

Players can create levels and share them with friends/the world, or they can also play Mario levels that other players have created. Super Mario Maker is guaranteed fun with endless replayability.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

Like Super Mario Maker 2, Pokemon Sword and Shield offers a couple of different multiplayer options.

Ultimately, players are going to be going head to head, battling their Pokemon, however, it also helps to make the Wild Area feel alive and can help players to complete their Pokedex with the trading functionality.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is probably the pinnacle of competitive multiplayer games on the Nintendo Switch.

The game is a chaotic fighting behemoth featuring 100's of stages, items, music tracks and collectables and boasting a roster of some of the most recognisable characters in video game history.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

It's safe to say that Animal Crossing: New Horizons was one of the standout games from last year. The island living sim couldn't have released at a better time as the world was starting to become enveloped by the COVID pandemic.

Thankfully, the game offered a level of normality and mundanity that people craved and coupled with the multiplayer elements that allowed people to visit their friends, it was perfection.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best selling game on the Nintendo Switch and for good reason.

It's the best version of the Wii U title, with stunning graphics, great tracks, a range of characters and hours of multiplayer fun.

10 Best Co-Op Games on Nintendo Switch

Super Mario Odyssey

Now, don't get me wrong, Super Mario Odyssey's co-op features aren't the most innovative, but the game as a whole is a masterpiece.

One player controls the titular hero Mario and the other controls his hat, Cappy. It's a near perfect game on its own but also a great introduction to multiplayer for younger gamers.

Monster Hunter Rise

Capcom's Monster Hunter Rise is the newest entry onto this whole list and it is one that definitely deserves its spot.

Slightly more intense than Mario Odyssey, players can team up with friends or random players to take down giant monsters. It's definitely not one for everybody and it requires a lot of investment, but if it's your type of game, it's fantastic.

Snipper Clips

We move from the newest game on the list to the oldest with Snipperclips.

The title has become somewhat of an indie darling on the console and is guaranteed to cause stomach pains from laughter as you team up to complete puzzles with your partner.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

I'll always have a soft spot for the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. It was a game I spent a lot of time playing co-op with my friend back on the Wii, so when the series resurfaced, I was over the moon.

It features some very solid action gameplay with over 50 of the most popular Marvel characters and allows you to play with three other friends.

Super Mario 3D World

Super Mario 3D World is another title that debuted on the Nintendo Switch this year after receiving a port from the Wii U.

Players can team up as a range of members from the Mushroom Kingdom to complete some fantastically well-designed platforming levels. When teaming up with family or friends, this game becomes extremely chaotic.

Overcooked/Overcooked 2

If it's chaos you're after, look no further than the Overcooked series.

Players team up to serve diners in a variety of kitchens that are constantly changing. Players need to keep on their toes and be aware of the changes, all while ensuring that the customers are kept happy.

While it may sound mundane, this, for me, is an absolute must play co-op game on the Switch.

Splatoon 2

Splatoon 2 is a fantastic title to play with friends. It's a 4v4 shooter, however, this time, rather than trying to kill your enemies, the goal is to cover as much land with your team's colour of paint.

It's a much more family-friendly take on the multiplayer shooter genre that is still more than competitive enough to be thrilling.

Among Us

Among Us rose to prominence last year, with over half a billion players playing the game in November at its peak.

It falls somewhere in between co-op and competitive depending on which role you're assigned but it is sure to be an absolute blast when you get a bunch of players together. The very low entry price is nice too.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

I was lucky enough to review Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. It's a great Zelda game and an even better Musou one.

Hack and slash your way through a range of levels using some of Breath of the Wild's best (and weirdest) characters.

Although this type of game is historically known for being quite shallow, Age of Calamity is rich in gameplay, content and lore and is a great time to play through.

Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics

Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics is the follow up to Clubhouse Games or 42 All Time Classics as it was known in Europe.

Despite "only" being a collection of board games, card games and smaller-scale games, these titles have found a huge audience and offer a great way to unwind with friends or family.
