Who Is Big Chungus?

Urban Dictionary, defines Chungus as “an overweight, giant, earth-destroying, god-killing rabbit.”

But the origin of Big Chungus can be traced back to a big internet moment when a clip of Big Chungus in Warner Brothers’ Wabbit Twouble starring Bugs Bunny was rediscovered.

To add a humorous element to the movie, it showed a plumpy version of Elmer. On seeing it, Bugs Bunny tries to mock him by copying his “fat appearance,” thereby transforming into Big Chungus. Here’s a video of it:

But this version wasn’t nicknamed back then. It was done years later in 2018 when this particular image of fat Bugs Bunny turned into an internet meme and video game commentator, Jim Sterling, named it Big Chungus.

This meme went viral when a GameStop manager wrote a Facebook post about it involving a customer’s peculiar request. Apparently, a woman wanted to purchase the game Big Chungus for her son.

It’s obvious that no such game existed but a meme featuring an image of the fat Bugs Bunny on a fake PS4 game cover was all over the internet so the poor woman fell for it. That Facebook post of the incident went viral and placed the Big Chungus into the famed hall of memes.

Cameo By Big Chungus In Space Jam 2

Space Jam: A New Legacy marks the theatrical debut of both Big Chungus and Rick and Morty. But this isn’t the first big stint for the character. Back in April this year, Looney Tunes: World of Mayhem added Big Chungus as a playable version of Bugs Bunny in the game.

No one could have predicted that a fat Bugs Bunny from a 1941 Looney Tunes movie would actually become a full-fledged character in an official Looney Tunes game. Moreover, Big Chungus is now part of the Looney Tunes canon.

But the biggest surprise of all was seeing Big Chungus in Space Jam: A New Legacy. You can watch the cameo here (or skip it if you don’t want spoilers!)

As you can imagine, the whole internet went crazy after seeing the Big Chungus alongside an animated Michael Jordan. Here’s how Twitter reacted to it:

Some even wondered how the person, who made the Big Chungus PS4 game cover meme, felt after knowing it has reached such popularity that it ended up in a movie decades later.

Now that the company has received official recognition from Warner Bros, maybe we can for a dedicated Big Chungus movie as well. I am sure a lot of people would love that.
