In a blog post for the latest, and possibly last expansion for The Binding of Isaac, creator Edmund McMillen is claiming that this final expansion will bring an unprecedented amount of new content.

The Binding of Isaac is a long-running roguelike that has had, by my count, two different "final" expansions. Rebirth and Afterbirth were both supposedly the last additions to the game, which released all the way back in 2011 and ran on Flash. Rebirth was a complete update to the game, switching it away from poorly-optimized Flash to a more stable system while adding in a heap of new content. Afterbirth expanded on that with additional items, characters and bosses.

However, what's notable about the upcoming Repentance update is exactly how much it will bring to the table. According to McMillen, the DLC will be "actually bigger than Rebirth was to the OG flash game" and that Repentance is "basically a sequel at this point."

Looking at what's coming in this expansion, it doesn't seem like McMillen is exaggerating. Repentance will add over 25 new bosses, 100 new enemies and a whopping 130 new items. If you're a BoI fan like me, you're already foaming at the mouth thinking of how those items will work with others to totally break the game. Of course, Repentance will also come with new levels to house those new enemies and a new final boss.

Repentance has been in development since 2018, and remained largely a mystery to fans, with scant updates offered by McMillen. But with this update, we finally have a possible release date for the game as well, and it's not too far off. According to the DLC's page on Steam, Repentance will be releasing at the very end of 2020, on December 31. At least, that's the date marked on the game's page. It's also entirely possible that New Year's Eve is a placeholder for a different, earlier date.

For the first time, we'll also be getting regular updates on Repentance's development. Starting in the second half of October, McMillen will be updating the game's news page on Steam akin to the updates given for RebirthAfterbirth and Afterbirth+.
