JoyMasher's Blazing Chrome is a throwback to Contra with run'n'gun co-op backed by thumping metal music. For the latest trailer, the team has really captured that hardcore 80s vibe. Give it a watch below.

Contra and Contra-likes are in something of a renaissance this year. Konami put out the Contra Anniversary Collection earlier this month and will be releasing Contra: Rogue Corps this September. That said, Blazing Chrome stands out as more of a true throwback to classic Contra titles.

The action is frenetic as the bullets fly constantly. You and a friend will play through five distinct environments as you make your way through the campaign. You'll fight giant bosses and even jump on a motorcycle for a fast-paced chase scene. And everything is visualized in radical pixel art.

The 16-bit carnage really looks to ramp up as you play. The team says the game has a "genuine arcade feel", which hopefully translates to tough as nails gameplay. I'm not a glutton for punishment or anything, but if I can hop in and beat Blazing Chrome immediately then its failed in its mission to be a modern reimagining of Contra.

Given how many Contra and Contra-like games are coming out within a few months of each other, I'll be interested to see how Blazing Chrome sells. It has a great look and, from all reports, plays well. But can it stand out from a suddenly crowded market place? We'll know soon.

Blazing Chrome is coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One on July 11.
