Blizzard Gives New Update On Android and iPhone Versions of Hearthstone
Blizzard has made a new post today on the Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft website with an update revolving around current mobile development.
Since releasing in March on PC and coming to the iPad in April, the team has been rather quite on when we would Hearthstone playable on Android devices as well as on the iPhone. Considering the large market share of Android users, many have been loud trying to find out when they’ll be able to play on their touch based devices while lounging on the coach or on the go.
The good news is that the Android tablet version seems to be on track to still release this year, fulfilling Blizzard’s promise of a second half of 2014 release. Only needing “a few more mana crystals to polish and some Angry Chickens to chase down,” it looks like I’ll actually be able to play it on my Nexus 7 within the next month or so. The bad news, unfortunately, comes for users looking to play on their phones. The development team wrote the following in the post:
We’re also close to having Hearthstone out to our iPhone and Android phone users, but it’s become clear that we need a little more time to get that version right. While we have a build up and running internally, it needs a bit more work, and we don’t feel like we’ll be ready to share it with you until early next year. It’s very important to us that the phone experience for Hearthstone is just as accessible as the tablet and PC versions. One of the biggest challenges with that is revamping the user interface so it feels intuitive and offers the same quality Hearthstone experience, but this time from the palm of your hand.
Releasing Hearthstone on iPhone and Android phones is something we’re incredibly excited about, but ultimately we’d rather take the extra time to make Hearthstone’s user interface on the phone customized to feel great for the platform, rather than a port that doesn’t take into account the limitations of a smaller screen.
It’s a little bit of a bummer, especially if you are looking into getting a phablet this holiday season like an iPhone 6 Plus, Galaxy Note 4 or even a Nexus 5. However, I know I can live with it knowing that extra polish is being put into it to work appropriately on a screen 5.5″ and smaller while I continue to enjoy it on PC. Hearthstone is free-to-play and can be downloaded now from Battle.net or the App Store for iPad users.
