After 2K Australia provided plentiful work on the Borderlands and BioShock series in the past, 2K Games has officially confirmed that its Australian branch has officially been shut down and will be closing its doors.
In a statement to Kotaku Australia, 2K Games confirmed that its Canberra-located studio will be closed, following the studio’s previous work on the BioShock series and most recently releasing last year’s Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! on last-gen consoles, PC, and as part of last month’s Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. A statement from a source at 2K Games confirmed that the studio will be closed entirely, detailing:
“We can confirm we have taken steps to begin the studio closure process for 2K Australia in order to better manage ongoing development costs while improving the working proximity of our creative teams. We are very grateful for the team’s valuable contributions to numerous 2K projects, and are working with affected staff to explore reassignment opportunities where possible.”
Originally formed under Irrational Games, the studio soon after was re-named 2K Australia in 2007, followed by another re-naming to 2K Marin while working on BioShock 2 and The Bureau: XCOM Declassified before finally settling once more on 2K Australia to work on The Pre-Sequel!
Our thoughts and best go out to the developers and staff at 2K Australia, as 2K Games has confirmed that the company will work with affected staff for new career opportunities or reassignments where available following the studio’s closure.
