Modern Warfare 2 Remaster Still Has Controversial “No Russian” Level

Modern Warfare 2 Remaster Still Has Controversial “No Russian” Level

Some players have been able to get onto Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 remaster early, with one finding the No Russian level is playable.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is reportedly set to launch tomorrow. However, some players are finding themselves capable of jumping into the game early. Additionally, one player streaming the game shows that the hugely controversial “No Russian” level is still playable in the Modern Warfare 2 remaster.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has a level called “No Russian” where players take control of Joseph Allen who is an undercover CIA agent and finds himself taking part in a mass shooting at Moscow airport. When the player emerges from the elevator with other armed terrorists, the goal is to basically shoot all the civilians until there are no survivors as the terrorists progress through the airport.

Of course, players aren’t encouraged to shoot the civilians and can progress through the level after eliminating the armed FSB agents. However, the fact players were given the choice to shoot civilians was why the level was controversial. 2019’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare had a similar situation where players could shoot a baby. Those that did were greeted with a message and failed the mission.

Why am I reporting on this? Quite frankly, I’m surprised to see the level still in the game after the backlash it received in 2009. I’d had imagined that the modern climate we’re in would have seen the level either removed, despite being part of the story, or turned into a cutscene at best.

The “No Russian” level was entirely optional for the player and I imagine it’s still optional in the remaster. It also had a disclaimer warning the player that the following level may include disturbing content. The level is still playable in the remastered edition as proved in the stream of someone who is able to play the game early. There are other reports that some players are already able to play the game as well.

Twitter user ioN Racerize linked to a Twitch streamer playing the Modern Warfare 2 remaster featuring the “No Russian” level. If you want to watch the saved clip from the stream, you can click here, but as it could be disturbing to watch, you can just ignore that hyperlink.

Additionally, Duty Vengeance shared a screenshot of the Modern Warfare 2 remaster’s main menu screen with a Twitter news account to further prove that users are playing the game early. Which also makes me curious, are any of you playing this early?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is to launch tomorrow on March 31, and won’t include any online multiplayer elements.  If you don’t want to wait until tomorrow to play it, you can play Call of Duty Warzone which is currently available for free.
