Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Won't Have Loot Boxes, Will Have a Battle Pass

Activision is opting to go down a Battle Pass route with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare rather than paid DLC and loot boxes.

Prior to its launch at the end of this month, Activision and Infinity Ward announced its post-launch monetization plans for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare today, and I think it’s a plan that many will appreciate.

The biggest change for Modern Warfare this time around is that post-launch maps will be made available for free, rather than being sold in a piecemeal or Season Pass fashion. All maps that come to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare after release will arrive on all three platforms free of charge, which is a way for Activision and IW to keep the game’s community together. Considering Modern Warfare will feature crossplay this year, keeping players together is arguably more important than ever before.

For those worried about the inclusion of loot boxes or crates in Modern Warfare too, well, worry not. Activision says it will be moving to a Battle Pass system this time around, with loot boxes not being added to the game at any time, even after launch. “All functional content that has an impact on game balance, such as base weapons and attachments, can be unlocked simply by playing the game,” the blog post specifies.

Furthermore, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s first Battle Pass season won’t go live alongside the release of the game later this month. Instead, the first pass and its accompanying season will kick off later in 2019. “First and foremost, we are all focused on making the Day One experience awesome. Second, it’s important to us that everyone who is playing Modern Warfare has the chance to work their way through the new game and unlock all the rewards that are waiting for you,” said the post.

While some might not like the Battle Pass system, I think it’s safe to say that it’s much better than the loot box system that the Call of Duty series boasted previously. We’ll have to wait a few more months though to see how this new monetization system will work out for certain though.

Why Ratchet & Clank is the Most Important PS5 Game

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to arrive next week on October 25 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
