Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Will Not Have a Zombies Mode

Even though Zombies won't be in Modern Warfare, co-op gameplay will indeed still be present.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the latest installment in the annualized franchise from Activision, was formally unveiled yesterday and since that time, more information on the game has continued to come about. As of now, we know that we shouldn’t be expecting the return of Zombies mode in this year’s edition.

As originally reported by PlayStation Lifestyle, it was confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare wouldn’t boast the fan-favorite horde mode this time around. According to Infinity Ward’s Gameplay Director Jacob Minkoff, this was because the studio wanted the full experience across all areas of Modern Warfare to feel cohesive. Throwing Zombies into that mix somewhat ruins that sense of cohesion.

Comparing themselves at Infinity Ward to Treyarch, who recently released Black Ops 4, Minkoff said, “Because they focus on more of the stylized, graphic novel, super-hero experience, they can have the much more ‘out there’ different types of gameplay in their games. But for us, we’re trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don’t have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today’s conflicts and things we face.”

While the lack of Zombies might be a bummer to fans of the co-op mode, worry not, as the game will still have cooperative offerings. “We’re not ready to talk about cooperative play yet, but what I will tell you is that the single-player storyline goes directly into the co-op storyline. No stop. The events just continue.” Minkoff said. “So those elements—gameplay, progression, story—they just continue throughout everything that we have on the disc or digital download.”

There’s still a lot of other information that Infinity Ward and Activision will surely reveal about these co-op modes as time goes on. Until that time, you can expect to pick up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on October 25 for PS4, Xbox One, or PC.
