Catan: Starfarers Adds Much-Requested 5-6 Player Extension Today
Catan: Starfarers players will finally be able to bring all their friends to the board game table. The new 5-6 Player Extension opens up the board.
Catan: Starfarers launched last year and is widely regarded as an excellent reimagining of the 1999 classic Starfarers of Catan. That game, of course, is a spin-off version of base Catan that takes the board game to space. And, while reviews for 2019’s Starfarers were solid, many fans were hoping to be able to upgrade to a 5-6 player version. The Catan team has good news for you today, as they’re releasing just that. If you want to see everything included, give the official unboxing video a look below.
As you’d expect, the 5-6 Player Extension for Catan: Starfarers adds enough components for two more people to join in on the fun. That on its own is probably enough for many fans to slap $49 on the table. After all, adding more players to the fun will only make it easier to put big board game nights together once people are feeling safe to host those again.
However, that’s far from the only thing the 5-6 Player Extension adds. Most excitingly, it adds a new turn-taking system that aims to increase player engagement and speed up turns. I don’t know about you, but I often play games with slow-thinking friends. All of that downtime can get awfully boring after a while. This system looks to alleviate that by letting players do some actions while they wait on the player before them to make their moves. I’ve seen similar systems in other games and this seems like it will be a perfect fit for Catan gameplay.
And you don’t have to wait long to try it out for yourself. Catan: Starfarers is available now on the Catan Shop. It does require the base game, but most people looking to pick this up likely already have it.
