CDPR confirmed its upcoming expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be the studio’s biggest budget expansion yet. Scheduled for launch sometime this year, the massive expansion has dwarfed the amount of money dumped into creation of The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine.

The realm of Toussaint called to gamers in 2016 when The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine was released. This massive expansion seemed like an entirely new game, featuring a rich story and a bevy of new content. With Blood and Wine, many gamers believed CDPR had redefined the concept of DLC, but its upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Phantom Liberty may dwarf the precedent set by previous expansions.

While the next-gen version of the Witcher 3 is getting a physical release next month, CDPR fans have been hungry for more Cyberpunk 2077 content. The Phantom Liberty expansion will pick up at the end of the base game and stars actor Idris Elba as Solomon Reed. Keanu Reeves will return as Johnny Silverhand, and the expansion is being developed along Cyberpunk’s official sequel, codenamed Project Onion.

CDPR recently rejected rumors surrounding Cyberpunk’s cut content, but the developer hasn’t released many details about what content gamers can expect in Phantom Liberty. It will however be a similar sandbox to the base game, full of fresh threats as players are once again plunged onto the streets of Night City. Besides the expansion, CDPR is hard at work on a complete remake of the original Witcher game, first released back in 2007.

The popularity of Netflix’s Cyberpunk 2077 anime Edgerunners has reignited interest in the 2020 game, and fans are excited to see if the content from the show makes its way into the expansion’s overall story. Expectations for Phantom Liberty remain high, especially considering the high bar CDPR set with past expansions.

Cyberpunk players have been enjoying a series of mods, one of which adds time delineation to Night City, while another lets the player create a custom android companion. A recent mod automatically kills players if too many acts of violence tally up. An entirely new Cyberpunk 2077 campaign starring A-list actors, however, has fans excited, especially as Cyberpunk’s popularity has skyrocketed in the years since its original release.
