Champions Online to become Free to Play

Cryptic Studios and Atari have announced that Champions Online will become completely free to play beginning Q1 of 2011. Atari hopes to still make money from the game by selling new adventure packs, powers, and costumes.

Subscriptions will still exist as an optional option, and will be renamed “Gold Memberships”. Current users will automatically become Gold members. Gold Members will be allowed to mix powers, have access to more costume parts, and will be able to download current and future Adventure downloads for free.

A beta test for the Free to Play version will launch on November 9th, more info can be found at the official site. If you’ve been interested in the game but turned off by a monthly fee, this is your chance to see what it’s all about!

He's a huge comic nerd in the best sense of the term, with a particular love for the Creator Owned movement.
