Over the past few years, we've received so many battle royale modes in various games that I've almost become numb to it. Somehow though, 2K has found a way to surprise me once again by adding the popularized mode to a strategy game of all things.

Yes, Civilization VI is now set to get its own battle royale mode as part of the game's update this month. The mode, which is called Red Death, works about how you'd probably envision it to. Players will face off against one another trying to be the last ones standing. All the while, the map of Civilization VI will begin to grow more deadly as more sections of it begin to be filled red fumes that can damage you. The last one standing is then picked up by a spaceship and is taken into space to avoid the dangers of the planet.

Honestly, it's easy to be snarky whenever we see battle royale modes added to games like this, but there's no reason to really be like that. If you don't want to ever play Red Death or any other battle royale variant that comes to a certain game, then you don't have to. At this point, I'm actually kind of intrigued to see how new developers will continue to try to add their own spin on the mode, especially within the confines of a certain genre.

You can check out the trailer below if you want to get an idea for how Red Death will work in Civilization VI more specifically. Civilization VI is out now on PC and Switch, but the Red Death mode will only be landing on the game's PC version.
