Could The Rock's New Video Game Movie Be Gears of War?

Could Dave Bautista and John Cena be joining him?

January 26, 2022

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has had his fair share of action in Hollywood over the years and his reign as one of the hardest working action stars is not slowing down yet.

In a recent interview with the man built like the side of a house, Johnson revealed that he was working on bringing “one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen,” and we discuss if it could be a Gears of War movie.

DC fans are eager to see Johnson make his DCEU debut as Black Adam this summer, as he channels the Egyptian anti-hero who should put on a spectacular magic show for the fandom.

Dwayne Johnson’s Interview

In an interview with Men’s Journal, Johnson was asked if he had anything on his schedule regarding video games, which prompted the reply:

“We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years.”

Johnson also confirmed that gamers can expect an announcement on which game is being adapted sometime this year.

The actor also brought comfort to a sea of gamers who are all too aware of the video-game-to-film curse that’s doomed many projects in the past:

“Of course, we’re going to do right by our gamer friends—but really we’re just going to make a great movie.”

Johnson prefaced his answer to the question by stating he was a big fan of Madden, however, we don’t envisage a roughhouse, battle royale-styled football match happening on the big screen any time soon.

Could the Project Be a Gears of War Movie?

The interviewer for Men’s Journal also prefaced their question by stating Johnson’s lengthy relationship with Microsoft and Xbox, hinting that it could be a franchise from that camp.

Gears of War definitely sounds like a guns blazing, pedal to the metal action bonanza that The Rock could be involved in.

The actor and athlete’s physique would also match that of characters Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago combined with the COG Armor, and the dynamic between the main characters of the franchise also presents the opportunity for actors of a similar ilk to unite with him.

Actors Dave Bautista and John Cena have had their names thrown into the fan casting list for a Gears of War live-action before and the three of them could certainly deliver some high-octane action.

What Else is in the Pipeline for Johnson?

In addition to the promotional tour and post-production for Black Adam, and now the preparations we know of for a video game film, Johnson also has a number of other projects in the pipeline.

To start with, it was recently announced that the actor will team up with Chris Evans to work on the Christmas action movie, Red One.

Johnson is also in post-production with DC League of Super Pets and is currently working on the announced San Andreas sequel as well as Robert Zemeckis’, The King.

If that already sounds like too much on one plate, The Rock is ready to prove us wrong again. A Doc Savage series has also been announced with Johnson attached, as well as a Big Trouble in Little China remake.

On top of all that, the former wrestler has also been promoting his line of official UFC footwear, Project Rock.
