Maybe you’ve never heard about Mikage. It’s a new Japanese studio led by Ryoei Mikage, who used to be at the head of the now-defunct ImageEpoch, the studio behind Luminous Arc and Criminal Girls.
Mikage revealed multiple new details on their future plans and their upcoming game Criminal Girls X. We already knew the game is free-to-play with microtransactions, and planned for a 2020 release, on PC and smartphone, with VR support for the smartphone version. Mikage now announced that a console version of Criminal Girls X will also be launching in Japan after the smartphone and PC version, through a deal with Nippon Ichi Software. Moreover, the PC version will be distributed via DLsite Nijiyome. Seeing Mikage is keen on bringing their games west, the console version of Criminal Girls X will definitely come over.
Next, Mikage announced a new project whose codename is “Mikage Project Original Western Game “, as in, it’s a new game that will be launching outside Japan. It’ll be a console game developed by Mikage and published by Axis Games. This game is scheduled to launch in 2021 in the west on PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC via Steam. a VR version will also release.
Mikage also published many new details on Criminal Girls X. Just like the previous games in the series, it’ll feature a protagonist in hell, who must rehabilitate the girls there. Criminal Girls X will have the highest number of characters in the series, with 24 girls in total, spread into four groups. The characters were designed by Kei Mochizuki.
This is Group A. We have from left to right, Misora voiced by Nanahira, Nana voiced by Chiwa Saitō, and Yuiko voiced by Aoi Yūki.
In Group B we have Mikimoto, Niina voiced by Aitsuki Nakuru, Usagi voiced by Miku Itō, Marsha, and Wakana. The seiyuu for certain characters are being kept secret. This is the case for Mikimoto, Marsha, and Wakana.
In Group C we have Tamaki, Emiri voiced by virtual artist QKiki, Meg, Ai, and Hotaru.
In Group D we have Satsuki, Shino, Selica, Ranran, and Hotaru. Yes, there are two girls called Hotaru.
Lastly in Group E, we have Hiyori, Mayoi, Kanami, Sumire, Chika, and Ichigo.
We also have a mysterious character, the protagonist voiced by Yūichirō Umehara, and another mysterious character voiced by Hikari Kubota.
New screenshots and information were also revealed. Overall, Criminal Girls X works like a typical mobage, with a character gacha, daily quests, etc. The battle scenes are in full 3D and can be played in VR. While they look just like a Shmup, it’s actually a turn-based RPG. Just like in previous games of the series, you don’t directly give orders to the girls. They suggest various actions, and you pick what to do.
As for the game’s story, it’s told through an Adventure game/visual novel style, with both 2D and 3D scenes. The 3D parts are VR compatible, and there will be multiple concerts sung by the characters players will be able to enjoy in VR.
Each of the 24 girls also has Memory side events you need to unlock by clearing various conditions. This will let you learn more about each girl and net you bonus rewards.
Criminal Girls X is also inspired by Buddhism, and the game’s story will have Oni appearing as bosses. They’re entities who test individuals to see if their rehabilitation in hell is going well. The Oni were designed by Rai Rai, a design duo made of illustrator Lam and designer Katou.
Lastly, just like in the rest of the Criminal Girls series, Criminal Girls X will have some sexual fanservice scenes as “rewards” when the player manages to correctly rehabilitate the girls. These scenes are in-development, so no screenshots were shared.
