Cryptic Studios Says WoW is the MMO to Beat

The MMO space is growing substantially at the moment. It’s not surprising when you consider the upcoming Cataclysm expansion for the biggest MMORPG game in existence; you guessed it, World of Warcraft. Head of Cryptic Studios, Jack Emmert, conveyed his opinion on paid subscriptions quite clearly, saying:

“You’re skating up hill if you don’t offer a free-to-play option, You’re skating up against World of Warcraft and theoretically SWTOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic). That’s your competition. And unless you think your games are as good or better than those – because you also have to overcome their reputation – it’s going to be highly unlikely a large number of people, meaning 200,000-plus, are going to be willing to subscribe to your game. And a lot of companies are making $50-60-70 million bets, and I just don’t see that there’s a market for their products.”

You’ve got to admit; most  paid MMOs are just slightly better than some of the good free-to-play titles out there, like Dungeon Fighter Online, Lord of the Rings Online and Runes of Magic. The Cataclysm expansion pack drops on December 7th.
