Counter-Strike: Global Offensive managed to hit a new all-time high in its number of concurrent players on Steam. The game hosted more than 1.4 million players at one time this weekend, only a short period after the reports around a new Counter-Strike title emerged online.

Out since 2012, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is still the most populated first-person shooter on Steam, with a magnificent consistency in hosting a huge number of players on weekends. The game's biggest competitor on Steam's chart is Dota 2, which is yet another big hit from Valve.

Earlier this week, dataminers discovered Counter-Strike codes inside a Dota 2 update, which was something odd, especially with all the rumors around an upcoming sequel. The leaks strongly suggest the next Counter-Strike will be based on Source 2 engine, but there is the possibility of moving the current CS:GO to the new engine, which was the same scenario that happened for Dota 2.

Previously, a report from an esports veteran journalist claimed that a beta version of Counter-Strike 2 might be released as soon as this month. The new project is said to be developed by previous Counter-Strike veteran developers. The report even claimed that the project has already been tested by a group of players secretly at Steam's headquarters office in Seattle.

Obviously, all these rumors around the existence of a new Counter-Strike game were enough to convince gamers to play some CS:GO this weekend. Also, this could be a huge indicator for Valve that even after 10 years, CS:GO is still a top choice for competitive FPS fans.

If the rumors turn out to be true, it remains unknown what would happen for the current CS:GO and the ongoing esports tournaments. The possible transition to a new engine and probably an entirely new game won't be easy for a community of this size.

We have already seen that the transition to Warzone 2 from the original Warzone faced some difficulties, as some reports suggested that Warzone 2 hasn't reached the milestones it was meant to.

Valve's own transition to CS:GO was rough as well. At launch, the company released the game on consoles and PC simultaneously, but it ditched the console version afterward to fully focus on PC.
