Cyberpunk 2077 – Afterlife: The Card Game Announced at Gen Con 2019

Board game publisher CMON announced their latest project today, a card game based in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe that's designed by Eric M. Lang.

Board game developer and publisher CMON is partnering with CD Projekt Red to create a new Cyberpunk 2077 card game. The award-winning Eric M. Lang, whose credits include blockbusters like Blood Rage and Rising Sun, is handling the design.  He also has quite a bit of experience in working with video game properties as he helped design both XCOM: The Board Game and Bloodborne: The Card Game. Details are still light about what exactly the game will be, but given the property and designer, chances are this is one to watch.

As mentioned above, the first look didn’t provide too much in the way of details. That said, we did get a few snippets of gameplay details. Players will take on the role of Fixers, the “databrokers and masterminds in Night City”. The game will use what CMON is calling “an innovative drafting mechanic and special dashboard” to bring the theme of Cyberpunk into the card game world.

Once you complete a mission, you’ll raise your personal Street Cred and survivors can pass along their experience to your newest recruits. It sounds like it takes some inspiration from popular worker-placement games like Lords of Waterdeep, while potentially dipping its toes into the Legacy style of board games. Legacy games allow players to make decisions that impact later games they’ll play. The style was popularized by Pandemic: Legacy and Risk: Legacy a few years ago. Since then, it’s become one of the more popular genres in the medium.

Interestingly, CMON is teasing that this is just the beginning of their partnership with CD Projekt Red. Could Lang’s take on The Witcher series be forthcoming? Only time will tell.

Gen Con 2019 takes place from August 1-4. I’ll have a more in-depth round-up of the hottest games early next week.
