Cyberpunk seems like it's destined to become a massive media franchise over the coming years. Not only is Cyberpunk 2077 planned to launch in early 2020, but CD Projekt Red has also already confirmed that it has two other projects associated with the IP in the works currently. Now, according to the original Cyberpunk tabletop game's creator Mike Pondsmith, it seems like there could be the potential for a movie down the line as well.

In a new interview with VGC, Pondsmith talked about the likelihood of a movie being made in the Cyberpunk universe and whether he's presently working to option the rights to make such a film. "I can’t really say anything on that," Pondsmith said in response. However, he didn't shoot down the idea altogether. Pondsmith added, "But with Keanu Reeves being tied up in things, it’s become much more of a possibility."

Assuming Cyberpunk 2077 is a smash-hit, which it seems destined to become, the advent of a movie based on the IP seems feasible. As Pondsmith pointed out, with Reeves now involved with 2077, it has surely caused many to take notice of the game who otherwise weren't before -- especially those executives who work in the film industry. Reeves is arguably one of the biggest actors of this current time period, so anything he attaches himself to at the moment will draw in more eyes.

Of course, just because Reeves has shed more light on Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't mean he'd automatically be in a potential film based on the game, either. So if you're looking forward to his appearance as Johnny Silverhand on the silver screen happening any time soon, don't get carried away just yet. As of now, there's no such deal to even turn Cyberpunk into a movie.

We'll see what the future holds for Cyberpunk in the realm of film, but as for in the gaming realm, Cyberpunk 2077 is set to arrive next year on April 16, 2020, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
