Cygames Takes Control of Granblue Fantasy: Relink Development; Platinum Games No Longer Involved
Cygames will be taking the reins on the development of Granblue Fantasy: Relink as Platinum Games is departing from the project.
If you head over to the main webpage for Cygames’ upcoming JRPG Granblue Fantasy Relink, you’ll notice that Platinum Games’ logo has been removed from the site. Additionally, the game has been removed from Platinum Games’ website. Both companies released separate statements as to why this has happened.
Changes regarding the development of Granblue Fantasy: Relink
Tokyo-based video game publisher and developer Cygames, Inc. (HQ: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President: Koichi Watanabe, hereinafter referred as “Cygames”) has recently been engaged in the co-development of the upcoming console game Granblue Fantasy: Relink together with esteemed developer PlatinumGames Inc.
Going forward, Cygames will handle 100 percent of development internally.
Cygames would like to assure everyone looking forward to the title that we remain committed to delivering a game that meets the expectation of our fan-base and gamers everywhere.
Regarding Conclusion of the Development Contract for Granblue Fantasy: Relink
While we, PlatinumGames, have been working with Cygames in co-development of the upcoming console game Granblue Fantasy: Relink, we officially announce our contract on the project has come to an end. Development will still continue, but be handled solely by Cygames’ internal development team.Advertisement
We would like to express our thanks to everyone who has shown interest in the project, and ask that the same support should continue for Granblue Fantasy: Relink as its production continues forward.
Obviously, the two companies have parted ways on their collaborative development of the upcoming title. I don’t think fans have too much to worry about though. Granblue Fantasy: Relink should still be coming soon so I’m sure not much has to change in terms of the development process. Granblue Fantasy Relink was originally slated for a 2018 release but has since been pushed back; no official date has been given since.
In case you missed it, Cygames revealed a deep look at a dungeon in Granblue Fantasy Relink back in December. This footage alone made it one of my most anticipated JRPGs. Additionally, the development team shared a ton of details on the game’s storyline, multiplayer, and a PC version. It’s worth noting that no PC version has been announced but Cygames did express interest in bringing it to Steam at some point.
Additionally, prolific fighting game developer Arc System Works is creating a core fighting game based on the Granblue series; it’ll be titled Granblue Fantasy Versus. The mobile director behind Granblue Fantasy gave fans plenty of details on the game’s accessibility as well as a potential PC version.
As previously mentioned, Granblue Fantasy Relink currently has no set release date. It’ll launch first on PS4 and we’ll hopefully hear about other potential ports soon after.
