Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Steamworks Migration Delayed to December
It’s been a busy day for Namco Bandai, mainly attributed to the announcement of Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin bringing the series onto the PS4 and Xbox One. The publisher didn’t stop there though, as they have also shared new details about the migration of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition from the decrepit Games for Windows Live to Valve’s Steamworks.
With GFWL being heavily rumored to shut down back in July before Microsoft stated it would keep the service open, many developers decided to move their games on their online functionality over to Valve to ensure their games would be available to their fans online. Namco Bandai decided to explore their options with their recently ported version of Dark Souls and announced in October that they would be making the conversion this month. Time tables change though, and the team updated fans today to let them know that the migration has been pushed back to next month.
On the Steam Community page, the team updated their post stating that:
We are working hard to finalize the process to move your Dark Souls: Prepare to Die saves and achievements to Steam. We need to conduct additional testing and we are now targeting December to begin this process. We’ll have more information in the coming weeks. Thank you very much for your patience!
The transfer is a bit complex, as it requires users who purchased the game outside of Steam to redeem their GFWL token inside Valve’s digital distribution platform to ensure that they can keep playing their game and not have to purchase it all over again. Add in the fact that Namco Bandai is working to get players saves transferred over to Steam, something that games like Batman: Arkham City did not offer in their conversion, is well worth the wait to keep characters that have hundreds of hours poured into them.
You can purchase Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition now on Steam for $19.99 and play it with GFWL until the game is updated sometime next month to bring all its features onto the service. You can see the original announcement for the conversion of the game below.
We’re pleased to announce that next month it will be possible for players to migrate their Dark Souls: Prepare to Die games, saves and achievements from the Games for Windows Live platform to Steam.
-Games for Windows Live users will be able to redeem their Games for Windows Live Tokens on Steam to get Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition at no additional cost. (To find your Games for Windows Live Token, please head to the support webpage: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/billing/prepaid-codes/locate-games-for-windows-live-tokens)
-In the month of November, there will be a period by which Games for Windows Live Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition users will be able to transfer their Save Data (characters + progress) and Achievements over to their Steam accounts.
-Players will still be able to use their Games for Windows Live Tokens to redeem the Steam version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition at no additional cost even after the migration period ends; but game Save Data and Achievements transfer functions may not be available.
-Games for Windows Live Rankings will not be transferred to Steam.
The specific migration start and end dates will be available soon; however the migration period will begin sometime in November 2014 with more specific dates to come.
We will be sharing more information soon regarding the migration process soon, so stay tuned!
