You may remember Darwin Project for its boisterous showing at Microsoft's E3 2017 press conference. It came to Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview in 2018 and has stuck around in both since then. While updates have been somewhat scarce this year, that seems to have been because Scavengers Studio was heads-down in completing its 1.0 release. Today, the developer finally revealed that Darwin Project will come out of Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview in January 2020.

Not only will the full version of the game launch for PC and Xbox One, but the battle royale title will be hitting PS4 as well in January. Sony's platform typically hasn't been as friendly to smaller early access games, so it makes sense that Darwin Project wouldn't arrive on PS4 until its full release. Darwin Project's player count has apparently already hit 3.6 million and adding a new platform should only help that.

The free to play battle royale game will also get some new content updates alongside its official release, most notably a new gear-based class system. In Darwin Project's world, this tried and true mechanic takes the form of sponsor corporations wanting contestants to showcase their products. The Jet Wings are for more mobile players as they allow one to fly around and throw off their opponents. Meanwhile, the Grapple Gaunlet is for more aggressive players who want to close the gap between them and their target. Finally, the Headhunter Drone can scope out targets and perform other unspecified commands for more tactical players.

Of course, new cosmetics that embellish all of these gear-based classes are being added, and the game's next update will enable players to buy items from the dressing room. A short cinematic trailer was released to celebrate its impending launch and you can watch it below. Darwin Project will finally come out of early access and release for PC, PS4 and Xbox One sometime in January 2020.
