After going into Open Beta in late May of this year, developer Phoenix Labs today announced that their action-RPG Dauntless has now surpassed the two million player milestone since that time.

As a way of celebrating this achievement, Phoenix Labs has revealed that the next major expansion for Dauntless, entitled The Coming Storm, will be making its way into the game on August 9. Just like the Open Beta, this update will be free for all players.

As for just what players can expect with The Coming Storm, Phoenix Labs said the following about the new expansion.

The Coming Storm begins when an Ostian Dreadnaught, bristling with industrial might and an indignant crew, crashes into Ramsgate, the central hub in Dauntless, reshaping the sprawling city and introducing players to a variety of new NPCs, stories, and quests. A new Behemoth, Koshai, the Sovereign of Thorns, stirs beyond the horizon. Members of the Ostian faction also bring with them new technology. Players will be able to craft and wield new gear and weaponry to take on the Behemoth threat - including a explosive new grenades  and the first truly ranged weapon: the Ostian Repeaters.

New weapons, a new behemoth, and a drastic overhaul to the central hub of Dauntless seem to highlight some of the biggest changes that The Coming Storm will be bringing with it. CEO and co-founder of Phoenix Labs Jesse Houston said in a statement that the changes that this expansion is bringing are the result of the developers working alongside the community. "The Dauntless community is one of the most vocal and passionate groups of people in gaming, and they’ve helped us shape Dauntless into what it is today, and what it will become in the future," Houston stated.

Dauntless is currently only available on PC and, as mentioned, is available for play right now via Open Beta.
