I played DayZ back when you spawned on the beach with nothing but a Makarov pistol. That was back when the game--a mod at the time--was available for ARMA II. Though the game was promised to have an official release more times than I can remember, it has finally come to the Xbox One. It's still in Early Access.

One of my fondest memories of the game was singing on to defend my clan's base up in the forest near the dam North of Devil's Castle. It came under siege while most of the clan was offline and I was able to load all of our AS50s with Thermal Scopes onto a Ural and drive out safely--though the Ural had plenty of bullet holes in it.

That unscripted gameplay is one of the most sought-after elements of game design today. It's what inspired the Battle Royale genre.

Regardless of the fact that players have largely moved on from the survival shooter, it's still moving forward and that's a good thing for Bohemia Interactive.

I could barely run the game on my i7-6700k Skylake with a GTX 1070, but if it runs in any way on an Xbox One then I call that progress. Players will now have the chance to run around for a bit, aggro some zombies, bleed out, and/or starve to death on the Xbox One and, according to the developer, on the PlayStation 4 in Q1 of 2019.
