With a compelling mix of challenging roguelike gameplay and addictive Metroidvania elements, Dead Cells felt like the perfect mixture of two different genres when the game first debuted in Early Access in 2017, and from the looks of it, the game seems to have been a major financial success for its creative team at Motion Twin.
As detailed by USgamer, Motion Twin’s game designer Sebastien Benard shared some details on Dead Cells at GDC 2019 since the game launched in August of last year. Benard revealed that to date, the game has sold over one million copies, with about 60% of the game’s sales coming from PC. In terms of the game’s console versions, Switch seems to be the leading platform compared to PS4 and Xbox One.
Thankfully, Dead Cells‘ success certainly seems to have paid off for the studio, as during the GDC presentation, Beanrd detailed how the game was essentially a “last chance project” for the studio during its development. As Motion Twin was primarily working on other projects, including free-to-play games, Dead Cells seemed like it was exactly the kind of game that the studio needed not only to stay alive, but to break out in a major way.
As a fan of the title myself, Dead Cells certainly managed to make a name for itself in a particularly crowded genre, and with new DLC on the way for the game in the near future, luckily there is more around the corner for this acclaimed (and successful) title.
