Electronic Arts officially confirmed to PC Gamer that Dead Space Remake will be a native Steam launch, meaning players will not be forced to run the Origin launcher before playing it. However, it doesn't mean a complete removal of Origin from the board!

EA's Origin launcher has never been a favorite PC launcher among gamers. Since its release, the launcher had multiple issues and some remain unfixed even after all these years. The backlash over Origin finally forced EA to release a new launcher which is now known as EA Desktop Launcher. That being said, Origin is still active, and even some new games from the company such as FIFA 23 force players to run Origin as a secondary launcher even if they are playing the game through Steam.

Electronic Arts has previously mentioned that it plans to retire Origin and replace it with EA Desktop Launcher, however, the decision still seems to be pending. The fact that Dead Space Remake is launching as a native Steam game doesn't seem to be a hint at a broader change, as we already saw it happening with the F1 series back in 2021. Also, Need For Speed Unbound is another upcoming game from Electronic Arts that will require players to install and run Origin when playing it. Even Star Wars Jedi: Survivor which doesn't have a release date yet will require players to run Origin based on its Steam listing.

In the long run, it seems like EA would only be replacing Origin with EA Desktop Launcher rather than releasing all games natively on Steam. EA Desktop Launcher has been in the beta phase since its soft launch, but you can no longer see the Beta indicator when running the launcher. It probably means the new launcher is ready to become the company's main PC platform, and the retirement of Origin is probably just a matter of months.

Dead Space Remake targets a launch in January 2023 and apparently, will not use a DRM lock as the Steam page of the game doesn't refer to it. However, it could be added when we are closer to the launch.
