Death Stranding is "Not a Stealth Game" According to Hideo Kojima

While Death Stranding might share some similarities to his past work, Hideo Kojima emphasized that he is aiming to deliver something new.

As one of the most anticipated games of the generation, Hideo Kojima’s long-awaited Death Stranding got a big showing last week with a brand new trailer and confirmation that the game will, in fact, be coming later this year. While the new trailer might have left viewers scratching their heads more instead of answering questions, Hideo Kojima has shed a little more light on what to expect from Death Stranding…and it sounds like that you shouldn’t expect much of it based on what the famed game creator has made before.

Following last week’s trailer and new bits of information revealed on Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima has been gradually sharing a few more interesting pieces of behind-the-scenes info on the game over on his personal Twitter account. Recently, one of the most notable elements of Death Stranding that Kojima emphasized is that he stated it is “not a stealth game,” and that it should not be considered a “shooting gamer either.” Instead, Kojima clarified that he considers the game to be an entirely “brand new genre” consisting of an action game and a “strand game,” marked by the game’s unique social strand system.

This comment echoes sentiments that Kojima has shared in the past about the exact nature of what Death Stranding exactly is, and that it will blur a lot of lines when it comes to traditional game genres. Naturally, some players might have expected the game to rely somewhat heavily on stealth and shooting mechanics based on what we saw from the new trailer last week and Kojima’s past work on the Metal Gear Solid series.

Instead, Kojima seems to be tempering expectations a bit and trying to say that Death Stranding doesn’t fit in traditional genre molds, even if it’s still not quite clear what the game exactly is yet. That said, we won’t have too much longer to wait before the game arrives this fall to find out for ourselves.

Death Stranding will be coming exclusively to PS4 on November 8, 2019. If you have yet to pre-order the game, you can do that right now over on Amazon.
