While the game was initially aimed to release this holiday season, Arkane Studio's Deathloop is instead shifting its release to Q2 2020.

Initially shown with a stylish trailer and a unique premise, the upcoming Deathloop from Arkane Studios–the makers of the Dishonored series and Prey–has been among the more high-profile releases scheduled for the end of this year. The game’s core idea featuring a pair of assassins rewinding time to execute the perfect hit made it an anticipated release alongside the next-gen consoles this holiday season. However, like a few other upcoming AAA releases in the past few weeks, Deathloop will be pushed back a bit to allow for some additional development time.

Developer Arkane Studios posted an official statement that Deathloop will be delayed until early next year from its original release window in late 2020. According to the studio, the primary cause of the delay has been the shift to working remotely in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, with Arkane stating that development is “taking longer than normal” in order to deliver Deathloop at the “quality level that defines both an Arkane game and a true next-gen experience.”

In light of the delay (and to keep its staff’s health and safety in mind), Arkane detailed that it is aiming to release Deathloop in Q2 2020. The studio added that with the extra development time, Arkane is planning to bring Deathloop to players “with as much character and fun as you’ve come to expect from our team,” and that a new update on the game will be “coming soon.”

Arkane’s title is the most recent high-profile delay for a game set to release this year after last week’s news that Halo Infinite would also be delayed into next year. Given the continuing uncertainty and challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, it’s not entirely unrealistic that we may end up seeing a few other major releases end up being shifted into next year. However, Arkane’s next title still seems like an incredibly promising one, and hopefully we won’t have too wait too much longer to see it fully-realized.

Deathloop will release for PS5 and PC in Q2 2020.
