Koyoharu Gotouge created Tanjiro after getting influenced by Himura Kenshin from the Rurouni Kenshin manga. At first, Gotouge drew Tanjiro without the scar or the earnings. However, he later added these features to make this character stand out.

In the story, Tanjiro is one of those characters who can go to any lengths to protect their loved ones. He is always ready to put his life on the line for Nezuko, who was turned into a demon.

Tanjiro strives to become a mighty demon slayer and find a way to turn his sister back into a human. He undergoes intense training to learn the Water-Breathing sword style and eventually becomes a member of the Demon Slayer Corps.

In his journey, Tanjiro goes against several demons, but he never loses his humanity. Given that his sister is a demon, Tanjiro understands that not every demon is evil.
