Muzan's nightmare, Yoriichi, was one of the most powerful Demon Slayers of the Sengoku Era. He was the twin brother of Michikatsu Tsugikuni, who is currently a demon and holds a position in Upper Rank 1.

Yoriichi was meant to defeat Muzan because of his commendable abilities, but he failed to do so.

Yoriichi and Michikatsu were born over 400 years before the anime's events. Similar to Tanjiro, Yoriichi was born with a birthmark on his forehead.

Yoriichi's father hated him because of his birthmark, and that's why he led a tough childhood. As a child, he never smiled or spoke anything, so Yoriichi's mother made him hanafuda earrings to shower him with Sun Goddess' blessing. And the same earrings were passed down to Yoriichi's bloodline, including Tanjiro.

Between all that mess, Yoriichi managed to become the world's greatest Samurai. He was also the first Samurai to practice solar breathing, and all other breathing techniques are derived from it.

Yoriichi was powerful enough to defeat Muzan; however, he couldn't do so. That's because he couldn't come down to kill his twin brother, leading to his own demise.

Even to this day, Muzan is scared of Yoriichi. That's precisely why he so badly wants Tanjiro dead after he saw him wearing the same earrings.
