Demon's Souls Was Reportedly Supposed to Have an Easy Mode at Some Point

Bluepoint Games' creative director says they wanted to add an easy mode to Demon's Souls remake at some point in the development process.

With PS5’s launch last week on November 12th, so many gamers around the world started their deadly adventure in the remake of Demon’s Souls, a stunning 9th-gen version of FromSoftware’s original game that was launched as a PS3-exclusive back in 2009. Now, a recent interview with Bluepoint Games reveals some interesting info about their ideas for the remake before its launch, including the addition of an Easy Mode to the game.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Gavin Moore, the creative director behind Demon’s Souls at Bluepoint Games revealed that they wanted to add an Easy Mode to the remake of Miyazaki’s action-adventure at some point, but eventually, they decided to put the idea aside as it could affect the overall balance of the game. Moore said:

This project remakes the work of another development team. While we’ve made some changes, our core driving mantra has always been to preserve the spirit and intent of the original creators.

While we considered and discussed an easy mode, we ultimately decided it wasn’t our place – merely being custodians for this amazing game – to add something that would fundamentally alter its balance.

While adding an Easy Mode to Demon’s Souls remake could bring more new players to the game, it would probably end up in the huge disappointment of FromSoftware’s old-school fans.

That being said, Bluepoint Games tried to make some significant differences in the accessibility features, and make the game playable for a bigger audience. Moore continued:

Why Ratchet & Clank is the Most Important PS5 Game

We’ve included an option to switch the audio from stereo to mono, with an added choice to play the sound either on the left or right. For those who experience color vision deficiency, we added the ability to edit the UI palette. Some players are sensitive to certain types of screen movement, so we’ve included a toggle for motion blur and camera shake.

Demon’s Souls is currently available on PS5 exclusively for $69.99.
