Dennis Hopper: May 17, 1936 – May 29, 2010

Dennis Hopper was one of the coolest men to ever walk on the planet – PERIOD! He has appeared in classic films such as Rebel Without a Cause and Easy Rider, and even directed Colors; but to gamers he will be remembered as King Koopa – which wasn’t such a bad thing.

Once upon a time – we were kids and everything was cool. Remember how every game was awesome in its own way and how anything pertaining to video games was cool onscreen. I know that some of you remember seeing The Wizard on screen for the first time and being blown away when you first saw Super Mario Bros. 3. What does this have to do with Dennis Hopper? Well since the announcement that there was going to be Super Mario Bros. movie – the first live adaption for a movie based on a video game – every cynic and critic came out of the woodworks and said how the movie is horrible and was an embarrassment to the actors in it.

Well, I was 15 when the movie came out, and I was excited to see some of favorite characters on screen. This was a great experience, because it was before I became snobbish about entertainment and gaming. In the gaming culture, if something isn’t cool, it’s lame or a game is horrible, and every video game movie is awful. However, Super Mario Bros. paved the way for video game movies today – think about that this weekend now that Prince of Persia is out in theatres and has A-list actors and producers attached to it. Let’s be grateful that a big star like Dennis Hopper had the guts to put his mark on a movie like this and paved the way for the bridge between Hollywood and gaming.

Rest in Peace Mr. Hopper and I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day!
