Board game fans might remember a time before Gloomhaven. Back when dungeon-crawling board like Descent held the crown as one of the best ways to play Dungeons & Dragons in board game form. Of course, games like Gloomhaven came along and stole Descent's lunch with their level of innovation in the space. However, Fantasy Flight Games has a new version of the game that's both absolutely massive and full of fun ideas. Give it a look.

Descent: Legends of the Dark is not just a third edition of the popular classic. Instead, FFG sees it as its own new spin-off in the line. The game is fully cooperative and uses a free companion app to bypass some of the fiddliness the genre brings. And, of course, there are tons of miniatures, terrain tiles, and other components. The game will run you a wallet-busting $175, but you are getting a ton from the box.

I will say that, personally, I don't love the art. The minis look great, but there's something off about the comic book-style character portraits that don't sit well with me. I'm not saying I won't give it a whirl, it's just not my style.

What is up my alley is how the game uses the app to facilitate weapon crafting and upgrading. Being able to modify my character both with his/her loadout and through newly acquired gear sounds awesome. The parallels aren't exact, but it makes me hopeful that this will feel a bit like Diablo the board game.

Descent: Legends of the Dark is set to launch sometime in the second quarter of 2021. It is available for pre-order now at your friendly local game store now.
