Destiny 2 Will Support 4K/60fps and PS4/Xbox One Crossplay on PS5 and Xbox Series X

With Destiny 2 coming to next-gen systems, Bungie outlined some of the key features that the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will offer.

Over 3 years after its initial releaseDestiny 2 continues to be supported with expansive ranges of content and new missions for players to take on. Following last year’s Shadowkeep expansion, today Bungie outlined some of the major new additions that players can expect to see all the way through 2022, including how the Destiny 2 experience will be enhanced with the upcoming next-generation consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

During a reveal livestream today for the next expansion, Beyond Light, Bungie outlined some of the features that players can expect from the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Destiny 2, which are planned to launch on the systems later this year. Specifically, it was confirmed that Destiny 2 will run at 4K/60fps on both platforms, while also allowing players to make a seamless transition from current-gen systems into next-gen.

As detailed on the stream, Destiny 2 will offer upgrades for players on both PS4 and Xbox One to their corresponding next-gen console family (PS5 and Xbox Series X) for free, including any expansion content purchased on the current-gen system. On Xbox Series X, this will be supported by the platform’s Smart Delivery feature, but PS5 players will be provided with a similar upgrade option. Likewise, progress from the base game and expansions will also be carried over to the next-gen systems.

Bungie also detailed that with the launch of the next-gen systems, Destiny 2 will offer intergenerational crossplay between current and next-gen systems of the same family; ie, PS4 with PS5, and Xbox One with Xbox Series X. This ensures that whether you’re playing on current systems or next-gen hardware, you’ll be able to still gather together with friends to do raids or take on challenges with your Guardians.

The main caveat to address is that this crossplay is limited to consoles of the same family and doesn’t offer crossplay support between PS5 and Xbox Series X, or with other platforms like the current-gen consoles and PC. At the moment, full crossplay support is a feature that Bungie is still aiming to integrate across platforms, but with the current development roadmap wouldn’t happen until at least 2021.

Destiny 2 is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC, with the game confirmed to be arriving later this year on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
