We may have the name of Destiny‘s major expansion planned for this fall by way of a trademark filing on “The Taken King” last week with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The filing was spotted by a user on NeoGAF and had gone unnoticed for the past week until now.
The trademark application is accompanied by the logo below that bears a symbol strikingly similar to the symbol of the Hive in the game. While that may not be enough to make the assumption that this is the next expansion, on top of that, the attorney that filed for the trademark is Jim Charne, who also filed for the trademarks for The Dark Below and House of Wolves.
All this leads to the very reasonable conclusion that this is in fact the planned major expansion for this year previously code-named Comet in a past Destiny plan leak. If that leak still holds true, this expansion may even be sold at retail akin to a game of the year edition.
This lines up with the agreement Activision and Bungie originally signed for the franchise planning a full game release every two years, with a large expansion taking place in each middle year.
Hopefully we hear more about the expansion soon, possibly even at E3.
