The latest Server Slam playable preview event for Diablo 4 kicked off this past Friday, May 12, and it seems to be generating a lot of positive buzz for the game ahead of its official launch on June 6. Still, there have been plenty of complaints about one particular character class — the Necromancer — whose powers seem to have been scaled down way too much in the eyes of a lot of fans.

Just a cursory glance at Diablo 4 on Reddit shows a plentiful amount of positive reactions, from the reduction in legendary drop rates to enhanced dungeon design variety to the game's general overall performance, which seems to have become a hot-button topic again in the gaming community as of late, with recent major releases like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Redfall posting some particularly bad optimization issues, especially on PC.

But no matter how much praise the Server Slam is brining upon Diablo 4, it can't seem to assuage the concerns raised by the changes to the Necromancer class, about which a lot of players in the event have been complaining since the new event started. It's a class that earned itself a lot of early hype and excitement, but recent complaints have spread so far that some people on the forums seem to have become annoyed with the frequency with which the topic has been popping up.

Most of the issues seem to be connected to the severely reduced health threshold of the skeletons summoned by the Necromancer. "90% of the time they die before they do any damage," commented Reddit user bigchungus9080. "If theres any AoE they just blow away like paper even the shield skellies with all the defense talents just blow away."

And it isn't just the Necromancer's summons that have been irking some players; as Ir0nhide81 puts it, "Not just necro minions but all minions or summons die 75% faster now. Even druid wolves are dying once every like three to four minutes."

And as many players have pointed out, even buffing or healing the summons doesn't seem to be of much help. It seems like a lot of Necromancer players have resorted to repeatedly spamming the Raise Minion skill, which some have decrried as taking all the fun out of the class. Said DktrTrevorkian, "If the spell just resummoned a new skelly to replace your lowest health one that might be less awful instead of just restoring 10% health over time ... Skeletons just feel like a trashy liability now and good lord I hope this changes before launch."

Even with all the complaining about the skeletons' new and impaired sustainability, some people seem pleased with the nerfing of the Necromancer. One such person, cyatosis, who had been playing Necromancer since Diablo 2 and praised Blizzard for balancing out the classes and raising the difficulty for Necromancer mains. "Necromancers were stronger than sorcerers with an army of undead minions (which take no skill points) to absorb damage beyond anything a Barb could dream of and never having to worry about saving a corpse for a minion because they never died," they said.

The Server Slam event is set to continue throughout this weekend, a final playable precursor to the release of Diablo 4 on June 6. The next exciting entry in the Diablo series will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, and it's one of our most highly anticipated games of 2023.
