Bandai Namco and Toei Animation delayed Digimon Survive (PS4, Switch, Xbox One, Steam) several times over the years, but the game finally has a release date set for 2022 now. The tactical JRPG featuring choices that matter and which can led to main character deaths had an incredibly rough development history, here's what happened.

Digimon Survive Finally has a Release Date (April 18, 2022 Update)

Bandai Namco announced via Famitsu magazine releasing April 19 that Digimon Survive will be launching on July 28, 2022 in Japan. It's very likely Bandai Namco USA will confirm in the next few hours that this is a worldwide release date for Digimon Survive.

Digimon Day News (February 27 2022 Update)

Bandai Namco held on February 27 the Digimon Day, revealing new details on Digimon Survive. We heard about the game's battle system, characters, branching story routes and endings, and new game + content. A new Digimon Story game was also confirmed to be in development and it will be unrelated to Cyber Sleuth.

Kazumasa Habu also explained that the development of Digimon Survive was restarted at some point explaining why the game got delayed so much. A brand new trailer was also revealed.

Was Digimon Survive canceled? New 2022 delay (October 28, 2021 update)

On October 28, Digimon Survive producer Kazumasa Habu tweeted a new statement regarding the game's development. He explained it's necessary to allocate more time to the game's development, moving the release date to 2022.

Kazumasa Habu added this wasn't an easy decision, but the team is hard at work to increase the quality of Digimon Survive. The tactical JRPG is not canceled. Digimon as a franchise is still continuing too, and recently a brand new series, Digimon Ghost Game was launched.

What happened to Digimon Survive? (July 28, 2021 Update)

On July 28, 2021, Toei Animation published its financials for the first quarter of the ongoing fiscal year, which ends on March 2022. In the additional materials of the report, the anime studio's schedule revealed that Digimon Survive was delayed to 2022.

Digimon Survive was first announced on July 21, 2018, in Japan for PS4 and Nintendo Switch, with a 2019 release estimate. The game was also announced for North America and Europe on July 30, on the same platforms plus PC via Steam and Xbox One.

However, nearly nothing else was revealed back then for months. which even led fans to believe it was canceled. On April 22, 2019, game producer Habu Kazumasa tweeted that the game was not canceled, with news coming that summer. And sure enough, we learned much more about Digimon Survive in Summer 2019, with a dev diary, new details on the story, characters, and the gameplay mechanics. The game was also delayed to 2020.

  • On April 23, 2020, Famitsu Magazine, in its calendar for future releases, stated Digimon Survive was indefinitely delayed.
  • Contacted by Gematsu, Bandai Namco stated this was a typo on Famitsu magazine's side.
  • On August 2, 2020, Toei Animation Japan on its official schedule still listed the game for 2020. However, Toei Animation Europe listed the game's release date as January 2021.
  • On August 8, 2020, Toei Animation Europe updated its site again, removing the January 2021 release date estimate for Digimon Survive.

Lastly, on October 8, 2020, Habu Kazumasa tweeted that the game's development process and the schedule were being reviewed. This led to an official statement being published on October 15, 2020, announcing a 2021 delay:
